Convert One-Point Soups to Zero-Point Soups
Many soup recipes can be easily converted to zero-point soup recipes. Just sauté the onion in a splash of broth or water rather than olive oil or butter. In addition, avoid high-carb ingredients such as potatoes and peas. It's that easy. But there are other benefits too: the ingredients are often less expensive and usually require less chopping time. Rules of Thumb for Nutrition Estimates
On this site, virtually all recipes assume that a pound of raw vegetables, cooked, generously serves four.
I calculate points based on all calories, including "free" vegetables. In contrast, Weight Watchers doesn't include "free vegetables" when calculating points.
When cooked without fat, a serving of most vegetables will have zero points.
For each tablespoon of fat used in cooking, add a point per serving. (That is, a pound of beans cooked without fat = 0 points per serving; cooked with 1 tablespoon fat = 1 point per serving; cooked with 1/4 cup fat = 4 points per serving.)
Be especially watchful of the fat quantity specified in cookbooks, food magazines and FoodTV; it's just not needed, especially if you're saving points for a special treat!
To estimate the nutrition and Weight Watchers points, I have used/use two software products. From 2005 to June 2008, I use a Windows-based software product called Accuchef which uses the USDA nutrition database as its source. In June 2008, I switched to a Mac and now use the MacGourmet application and its nutrition supplement. It also relies on the USDA nutrition database and when you add your own recipes, there's a great iPhone app that synchs with your desptop application. This means easy access to each recipe's ingredients for convenient shopping.
